Can anyone help with the valuation of diamonds?

I have a pair of diamond earrings me about 14 years ago my mom's friend. I that would be very cheap, around £ 10 – £ 20. However, my mom thought to be worth around £ 800 a couple of diamonds. I want checked, but I do not want to appear in the jewelers and feel like an idiot if they are worthless. So 3 questions. Is there anyway a novice in regard to the valuation of jewelry can tell if it may be worth something? Do you think things get shown the value Jewelry Worth almost nothing? And you can tell immediately whether it is valuable or trash (not necessarily the real value but a gross IDEA)?
