Does a magnet pick up gold? I lost a piece of jewelry in 6-8 feet of water from the river 1 month ago.

This is driving me crazy! I a cross hanging around my neck that I took off before 4 July waverunning. I know exactly where it sank, but did not have time to look below. It's been going crazy ever since. My mother gave me the cross for about 11 years ago and is very sentimental for me. I have a large magnet, a pole of a pool cleaning accessories (network attach, to filter sediment or mud). But I've never tried to see if a magnet attached to gold. The gold cross is in 6-8 feet of water rights in a dock. I'm driving 2.5 hours for my search today. Any suggestions? The responses of Nice, please! Thanks in advance!
